ABC could only be mad at glam guy Adam Lambert for so long and has given the flamboyant singer a spot on this week’s The View. The network finally caved from its short boycott of the controversial American Idol runner-up in the aftermath of his provocative performance at the American Music Awards over a week ago.
ABC received around 1,500 complaints about Lambert’s “sexually-charged performance” at this year’son Sunday.
During the performance millions of viewers saw Lambert “simulate oral sex with a back-up dancer, plant a passionate kiss on the mouth of a male keyboard player and gesture to the audience with his middle finger during the closing act of the live music awards show.”
Lambert’s appearance on Good Morning America that was scheduled the week after the awards was quickly canceled. On the heels of that dismissal, the singer was canned for ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and its New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.
In a statement from ABC, the network “decided not to move forward” with booking Lambert on Kimmel’s December 17th show.
Appearing on The View this Thursday, Lambert’s taped appearance on the show will air a day after he is honored by View co-panelist Barbara Walters on her 10 Most Fascinating People of 2009 special, which also airs on ABC.
Besides Lambert, Walters’ picks this year include Sarah Palin, Kate Gosselin of Jon & Kate, Fox News’ Glenn Beck, Lady Gaga, NFL star Brett Favre, and Tyler Perry.
ABC had insisted that Lambert’s sexual orientation and his same-sex kiss on the American Music Awards telecast did not figure in its decision for his multiple appearance cancellations. The Disney-owned network had conceded that it had been “caught off guard” by Lambert’s previously unrehearsed behavior. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) asked, in a statement, for ABC to produce “clarification on ‘caught off guard’.”
Meanwhile, the Liberty Counsel, a law firm affiliated with the late Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, has filed a complaint with the FCC over Lambert’s AMA performance.
Lambert has been scheduled for NBC’s The Jay Leno Show on Dec. 21.
